Hill, Alyce (2015) The Effects of Mindfulness-Based Interventions on Work Stress: A Meta-Analysis. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
The effect of mindfulness-based interventions on work stress was examined using a meta-analysis. Fourteen effect sizes from 13 studies, using 1216 participants, were synthesised. A large and significant effect was found, supporting the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions on work stress (Hedges’ g = 0.843), however the effect size was inconsistent due to high heterogeneity (I2 = 91.5%, p < .001). Subgroup analysis showed that manualised interventions (Hedges’ g = 1.214) were more effective than non-manualised interventions (Hedges’ g = 0.489), displaying high inconsistency (Q = 4.49, df = 1, p = 0.034) and explaining some of the inconsistencies in effect sizes across studies. A further subgroup analysis found a large, significant mean effect size for randomised control trials (n = 10), (Hedges’ g = 0.947), whilst a medium, mean effect size was found for non-randomised control trials (n = 4), (Hedges’ g = 0.583). A non-significant difference was found between randomised and non-randomised control trials (Q = 0.641, df = 1, p = .423), indicating that the type of study design did not explain any of the inconsistencies in effect sizes across studies; however due to unequal group sizes these results have to be interpreted with caution. Although derived from a relatively small number of studies the results support the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions on work stress.
