Abstract

The purpose of the current study was to compare the Golden (1978b) Color-Word three-subtest version of the Stroop test (GCWT) with the Delis, Kaplan and Kramer (2001) four-subtest Delis-Kaplan Executive Function System Colour-Word Interference Test (D-KEFS CWIT). The aim was to examine whether or not the CWIT demonstrates incremental validity when compared to the GCWT. The normative sample used in this study consisted of 70 Australian participants with no history of neurological or psychiatric conditions, aged between 20 and 76 years old. Participants were administered the GCWT and CWIT versions of the Stroop test and other measures of word reading and verbal fluency. A principal components analysis revealed two components: the first containing all seven of the GCWT and CWIT conditions and the second component containing measures of word reading and letter fluency. Contrary to expectations, the CWIT fourth switching condition loaded on the first component and did not relate to the Category Switching Test of the D-KEFS. No evidence was found to support the assertions that the CWIT fourth Inhibition/Switching condition measures capabilities above or beyond those of the traditional three-subtest Stroop conditions or, that it is a more demanding mental flexibility measure. Analysis of variance determined that the Stroop interference was observed on the third condition of both versions of the task. This suggests that practitioners are obtaining similar information from both versions. With lower reliabilities reported for the CWIT and no role for the additional fourth condition established, the current study provide no evidence to support the use of the more costly and longer CWIT version of the Stroop in preference to the GCWT version. It is anticipated that the results from this study may encourage further development and investigation of the two measures.
