Core Beliefs mediating self-reported childhood trauma and adult romantic relationship attachment experiences

Abstract

There has been little research to date on how maladaptive core beliefs mediate various aspects of attachment, so this study tested whether early maladaptive schemas mediate the relationship between self-reported childhood trauma and attachment difficulties in adult romantic relationships. In a cross-sectional study of 85 undergraduate psychology students, participants were given an online survey that included an adapted version of the Childhood Traumatic Events Scale, the Young Schema Survey – Short Form Version 3, and the Experience in Close Relationships – Revised scales. Direct positive relationships were found between self-reported childhood trauma and attachment difficulties in adult romantic relationships, accounting for 16% of variance, and early maladaptive schemas, accounting for 8% of variance. The present study also had two novel findings. Firstly, there was a direct positive relationship between early maladaptive schemas and attachment difficulties in adult romantic relationships, accounting for 54% of variance. Secondly, maladaptive core beliefs mediated the relationship between self-reported childhood trauma and attachment difficulties in adult romantic relationships, with an unstandardised indirect effect of b = .82. Further research is suggested with larger samples of the general population to replicate the findings of the present study and with more sophisticated methodologies.
