Knorre, Zoe (2013) Humour in Therapy: A Discursive Psychology Perspective. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
The current study investigated the use of humour in real-life psychology consultations from a discursive psychology and conversation analysis perspective. Four extracts from therapy consultations at a university psychology clinic were analysed. The consultations included one initial consultation and three subsequent consultations. Participants (N = 5) included two psychologists and three clients. To reveal how humour is done in therapy, the data were analysed for their situated nature, co-construction, and action orientation in the talk. It was found that humour was used in therapy. It was found that humour in therapy talk was used in an informal manner and therefore not therapeutic per se. Humour was sequentially positioned and introduced using puns and metaphors that drew from shared understandings between the participants. Intricacies of the complex interaction of humour were illustrated such as how participants oriented to humour, and how participants recovered from a failed attempt at humour.
