Kyaw, Su Thinzar (2022) Effectiveness of LGBTQIA+ Awareness-Raising Workshops for Caring Professionals. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, intersex, and asexual (LGBTQIA+) individuals report receiving suboptimal care from caring professionals. This is even more pronounced for individuals residing in regional, remote, and rural areas. Research suggests cultural competency trainings regarding LGBTQIA+ may improve queer-affirming care however, its effectiveness has not been well established. Drawing on social-cognitive and self-determination theories, this quantitative study aimed to assess the effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability of a series of workshops delivered to four distinct caring professional groups in the Toowoomba region of Queensland, Australia with a sample of 35 adults (M = 45.43, SD = 11.72). Participants were recruited using snowball sampling. The three workshops were developed to enhance the professionals’ personal and professional knowledge, attitudes, and practices relating to 1) gender, sexuality, and variations in sex characteristics; 2) discrimination and marginalisation experienced by LGBTQIA+ persons; and 3) domestic, family, and intimate partner violence within LGBTQIA+ contexts. Longitudinal pre-and-post surveys were developed to align with workshop content. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test revealed a statistically significant increase of knowledge (Z = 5.16, p < .001) and practices (Z = -4.57, p < .001) between pre-and-post survey scores relating to LGBTQIA+ concerns. This study contributes to gaps within literature by providing evidence on the effectiveness of such cultural competency trainings in rural settings of Australia. Practical, theoretical, and methodological implications, and limitations of the findings are discussed.
