Lamprecht, Barbra-Lyn (2019) Effects of Clients Emotional Oversharing on Hairdressers Emotional Well-Being and Job Satisfaction. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Hairdressers find themselves in the unique position of being a captive audience to the emotional disclosure of their clients. While it is colloquially known that seeing your hairdresser is akin to seeing a therapist, the ramifications of hearing intense emotional content on a daily basis without formal training may pose risks to a hairdresser’s emotional wellbeing. Qualitative research methodology was used and the data of 11 participants was explored using thematic analysis. Transcripts across all participants revealed levels of emotional distress, social disconnect, and felt responsibility of a client’s happiness. Selfimposed and perceived employer expectations surrounding absenteeism and presenteeism and lack of perceived support revealed detrimental results. A major implication is the need for a review of the training provided to apprentices to include a transparency of the potential emotional requirements of the role. Considerations for workshops and ongoing training for hairdressers to better cope with the emotional demands of clients, including examining the culture of taking leave and the expectations of the business model could provide a sounder work environment.
