Abstract

Work assumes a central role in our daily lives, however people with mental illness often struggle returning to work or gaining employment despite a desire to do so. Participation in meaningful activities has been found to be beneficial where paid employment is not available or possible. It also supports recovery. Vocationally oriented community mental health services such as the Toowoomba Clubhouse operate on a recovery model framework to support individuals with mental illness find meaningful work. This study investigated the effect of length of Clubhouse membership on the Occupational Self-Efficacy, Career Adaptability, Career Optimism and Perceived Knowledge of the Workforce of members and explored members’ experiences at Clubhouse through the use of a multi-modal mixed methods design. 43 members of Toowoomba Clubhouse participated in the research. Occupational Self-Efficacy, Career Adaptability, Career Optimism, and Perceived Knowledge of the Workforce did not significantly differ across the different years of membership. However, there was a slight trend showing these attributes to increase in members after 3 to 10 years of membership. Thematic analysis of focus group data indicated six key themes regarding members’ experiences of Toowoomba Clubhouse: social connectedness, acceptance, personal development, practical employment support, employment readiness and confidence. The current findings support the literature surrounding the efficacy of Clubhouses in supporting people with mental illness to find meaningful work in recovery.
