Abstract

This study aimed to address the limited knowledge on learning outcomes for simulated learning activities (SLAs) incorporated in postgraduate psychology programs. The impetus for this research was the COVID-19 pandemic which restricted training opportunities. The research project was a pilot study that evaluated SLAs with client actors in the provision of psychological therapy via telehealth as a component of postgraduate students’ practicum course. The evaluative measure was counselling self-efficacy. The hypothesis presented was psychology practicum experiences with SLAs would contribute to improvements in student counselling self-efficacy. Four participants (N = 4) from the University of Southern Queensland postgraduate psychology programs provided data for this study. The method utilised was a within-subjects quantitative analysis with data collected from participants with the Counseling Self-estimate Inventory (COSE) questionnaire. The reliability change index provided the confidence intervals to indicate statistical reliability. The findings of the study showed mixed support for the hypothesis. Data analysis revealed that two participants had reliable changes in COSE total scores, with one participant indicating improvement and the other a deterioration. The inspection of the subscales found that three participants had reliable improvements for most factors. The results indicated that this pilot study met the research aim. However, the limitations of quantitative analysis meant that a comprehensive explanation for the changes in COSE score was not possible. Therefore, this research paper included recommendations for further research.
