Abstract
The rising costs associated with workplace accidents and injuries necessitate a greater understanding of employee safety motivation. This study examined how an intervention aimed at improving safety conversations might also affect participants’ autonomous motivation to work safely. This study utilised the framework of self-determination theory (SDT), which conceptualises both the reasons and degree of motivation for behaviour. The Self-Determined Safety Motivation (SDSM) scale was used to measure dimensions of safety motivation across 5 subscales. Using archival data collected in 2017, the sample included 19 male participants who were frontline leaders and supervisors working at a utilities company in South-East Queensland. A repeated-measures, longitudinal design was used to compare observed changes in safety motivation after implementation of the intervention. Using both a paired samples t-test and a Wilcoxon signed ranks test, the study found that intrinsic motivation, identified regulation and introjected regulation for safety behaviour increased significantly at follow-up. External regulation and amotivation both showed no significant change at follow-up. These results highlighted the importance of autonomy support in fostering autonomous motivation for safety. Interventions aimed at promoting autonomous safety motivation should endeavour to highlight the personal importance of safety and the role of supervisors as safety leaders. Theoretical and practical implications for these findings are discussed.
