Mackay, Melanie (2015) A Historical Journey Through Autism Spectrum Disorders: A Review of Autism: The International Journal of Research and Practice, 1997-2015. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
This study involved a systematic review of all articles published in the journal Autism from 1997 to 2015, to identify trends in research and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). A total of 678 articles were collated and examined utilising content analysis based on publication year; first author name, sex, and country; and subject content which was coded according to knowledge enhancement, intervention, diagnosis, reviews, family concerns, or other topic. Initially, articles published were predominantly from the United Kingdom. As the journal became more established, research articles from North America, Australia, and other European countries became more prevalent. Research in the ASD field is clearly dominated by female authors, with trends indicating that ASD research is increasingly becoming a female-led field of research. Publication trends display a strong increase in research focussed on social and interpersonal skills, and interventions in ASD. In general, Autism has displayed a strong interest in family issues, cognitive factors, diagnosis, and intervention research articles. Direct comparisons were made between research trends in Autism and the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders (JADD). Surprisingly, there were many differences between the two journals. This paper aims to contribute to the knowledge base of professionals by making a significant contribution to the understanding of evidence based practice in the field of ASDs.
