Abstract
As men are now living longer and healthier lives, research addressing ageing men’s sexual lives is warranted. Archival data was used to investigate whether total testosterone, free testosterone, and erectile function predicted sexual activities in healthy, heterosexual, ageing men reporting symptoms of late-onset hypogonadism. Self-efficacy theory was used as an underlying theory to test these relationships. Men with diagnosed erectile dysfunction were excluded from this study. The sample included 96 men aged 40 to 75 years (M = 55.72, SD = 7.1). It was hypothesised that total testosterone, free testosterone and erectile function would each uniquely predict sexual activities and that erectile function would mediate the relationships of total and free testosterone with sexual activities. Linear regressions and mediations were performed. Total testosterone did not significantly predict sexual activities, F(1, 94) = 3.73, p = .06, R2 = .04. Free testosterone did not significantly predict sexual activities, F(1, 94) = 3.83, p = .05, R2 = .04. Erectile function significantly predicted sexual activities, F(1, 94) = 62.84, p < .001, R2 = .40. Erectile function did not mediate total testosterone and sexual activities, b = 0.02, 95% BCa CI [-0.11, 0.16], or free testosterone and sexual activities, b = .09, 95% BCa CI [-0.03, 0.22]. Further research investigating the role of self-efficacy in sexual activities and the possible existence of nonlinear relationships between total testosterone and free testosterone with sexual activities among healthy, ageing men with symptoms of late-onset hypogonadism is warranted.
