McAuliffe, Heather (2020) Cognitive Appraisal and Coping in the Workplace: A Cross-national Study. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Poor mental health, increased health impairing behaviours, job strain, absenteeism, presenteeism have all been found to be negatively related to increased work-related stress. The present study uses the Transaction Model of Stress and Coping to examine the mediating effects of Secondary Appraisal on the Primary Appraisal and Coping relationship Secondary Appraisal was found to mediate Social Support Seeking, Problem Focused Coping and Emotion Focused Coping in High Individualistic| Low Collectivistic individuals, and Emotion Focused Coping in High Collectivistic | Low Individualistic individuals. Mediation was not supported in High Collectivistic | Low Individualistic individuals for Social Support Seeking or Problem Focused coping, with results suggesting that the engagement in coping requires a systematic process of engaging in Primary Appraisal to Secondary Appraisal to occur before activating these coping mechanisms. These finding suggest the need for stress management programs that have a focus on the unique cultural values of the organisational workforce.
