Do Personality Factors Predict Future Intentions to Use and Preferences For Digital Mental Health Services?

Abstract

Previous research (B. Klein & Cook; March et al. 2018) has suggested a strong preference for face-to-face services over digital mental health services, however has not investigated the impact of COVID-19. Therefore, the current study aimed to determine whether personality factors predicted preferences for and future intentions to use digital mental health services, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. A sample of 356 participants (M = 28.39, SD =11.56) were recruited for this study and consisted of Australian general community members and undergraduate university students recruited through social media advertisement and student courses from the University of Southern Queensland and Griffith University. Participants completed a cross-sectional online survey consisting of questionnaires for personality factors (NEO Five Factor Personality Inventory), preferences of mental health service delivery (face-to-face, self-help and therapist assisted digital services) and future intentions to use digital mental health services (Intentions to use scale). Data was analysed using moderated logistic regressions to determine if personality predicts future intentions to use and preferences for mental health services. Results indicated a greater preference for face-to-face services over digital services, with a high willingness to use digital services in the future, and that older participants had greater future intentions to use therapist assisted digital services. This study adds to the previous literature as personality no longer predicts service preference. Examining those with previous experience of using digital services and blending service delivery types could promote future use of digital services.
