Evidence Based Practice: Student nurses' behaviours, skills, knowledge and translation into practice

McCosker, Catherine E. (2016) Evidence Based Practice: Student nurses' behaviours, skills, knowledge and translation into practice. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

Evidence based nursing practice is a key standard for nursing care. Although evidence based practice (EBP) is mandated by nursing authorities, there are still barriers that impede its use. Student nurses learn EBP as part of the undergraduate nursing degree. Bandura’s self-efficacy theory and Benner’s nursing theory from ‘Novice to Expert’ provided the theoretical framework to examine the adoption of EBP. A within group, repeated measures design was used to investigate the change in student nurses’ attitudes, knowledge, skills and competence with EBP after completing the ‘Research Methods for Nursing’ subject, at the University of Southern Queensland in 2016. The Student Evidence Based Practice Questionnaire (S-EBPQ) and the Evidenced-Based Practice Evaluation Competence Questionnaire (EBP-COQ) were used to measure the changes. The unexpected results indicated that there was no change in attitude toward EBP on either scale. Although there was a statistically significant increase in Retrieving / Reviewing subscale on the S-EBPQ, there were statistically significant decreases on the knowledge, skill, and overall competence subscales on the EBP-COQ. There are no reports in the literature of similar results. Possible reasons for these results were investigated. The self-report measures, the convenience sample and the demographic profile may have contributed to the results. Further investigations are warranted to see if these results can be replicated. Confirmatory Factor Analysis could validate the use of the EBP-COQ in conjunction with the SEBPQ, and also validate its use with an Australian student nurse population.
