Merrin, Wendy (2015) Investigating the Efficacy of the "Mindfulness Breathing Companion" Mobile Application on Improving Mindfulness. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Mindfulness-based treatments have been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms in clinical populations and improving general wellbeing in non-clinical populations. To date, research has predominantly relied on self-report measures to understand the effects of mindfulness practice, with little research assessing these changes using objective measures. The present study used a randomised waitlist control group design to investigate breath counting as a measure of mindfulness using the Mindfulness Breathing Companion mobile application in a non-clinical sample (N=61 adults, no meditation experience), undergoing an 8-week program. Of the 61 participants, 33 were randomly assigned to the treatment group and 28 were assigned to the wait-list control group. Measures were taken prior to assignment to the app or control group, at week 5 and week 8. The Classic and Emotional Stroop colour – word interference tasks, and the Sustained Attention to Response Task were used to investigate the effects of mindfulness skill training using the Mindfulness Breathing Companion mobile application on attention. Additionally, the 7-stress items from the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales 21 were used to measure changes in the individual’s perceived stress experience as a measure of mindfulness skill training using the Mindfulness Breathing Companion.
