Exploring the Factor Structure of Juvenile Psychopathy in Three Self-Report Measures

Abstract

The reported inconsistent factor structure of juvenile psychopathy, both in and across measures and samples, has brought the validity of this construct into question. The Adolescent Antisocial Attitudes Scale (AASAS) was recently developed to contribute to the exploration of the construct validity of self-report juvenile psychopathy assessments. This study examined the factor structure and construct validity of the AASAS in comparison to two currently accepted self-report juvenile psychopathy assessments, the Antisocial Process Screening Device (APSD) and Psychopathy Content Scale (PCS). Exploratory factor analyses were performed in a community sample of 105 participants. Results revealed a two factor model of the AASAS 20-item and APSD measure proved the best fit for this data. The similarity of factor structures of the AASAS 20-item and APSD provides evidence of construct validity for the AASAS. Comparison with the PCS was unable to be conducted and is recommended for future research.
