Abstract

Homelessness is a global issue with many governments providing a variety of services, such as soup kitchens, housing support and health services. Homeless persons with drug and alcohol misuse issues are a vulnerable population and due to their transient nature, are difficult to engage in ongoing/extended services to facilitate behaviour change which in turn can impact their cycle of homelessness. Research has found that an individual’s participation in services, and types of services available are factors that contribute to treatment entry and exiting homelessness. Using the PRISMA framework, this study aims to examine the research on an individual’s RTC, their service attendance, AOD use and housing outcomes among homeless individuals with AOD misuse issues. The findings indicate that RTC identifies the stage an individual is at in their behaviour change process. However, it was found that RTC does not consistently predict AOD use change or program attendance and retention, and that program retention and attendance does not consistently result in AOD use change. This review provides insights for service providers and researchers seeking to engage homeless persons in AOD treatment services and will help to inform government agencies where to direct suitable resources to assist in breaking the cycle of homelessness.
