Molen, Melissa (2014) Evaluating 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching: The Effects on Parenting Stress, Dysfunctional Parenting Styles, and Disruptive Child Behaviour. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
The aim of the current study was to evaluate the 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching parenting program by examining the effects on parenting stress, problematic or disruptive child behaviour, and dysfunctional parenting styles characterised by laxness, over-reactivity, and hostility in discipline situations. A community-based sample of 31 participants consisting of parents with children between 2 and 12 years of age took part in the research study. Participants attended three 2-hour weekly 1-2-3 Magic and Emotion Coaching workshops and completed pre-intervention surveys and post-intervention surveys six weeks following the completion of the program. Consistent with study hypotheses, participants in the intervention condition reported significantly less parental stress and experienced significantly less problematic behaviour from their child at post-intervention assessment as compared to the waitlist control group. Significant results for dysfunctional parenting styles were also found for the laxness subscale; however, non-significant results were found on the hostility and over-reactivity subscales. Theoretical as well as practical implications of the findings are discussed further, as well as directions for future research.
