Morrison, Susan (2013) Effects of Sport-Related Concussion on Working Memory:. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
This paper reviews eleven published articles regarding the outcome of the effects of sport-related concussion (mTBI) of a male adult athlete population on working memory. The articles vary in their definition of concussion, the frequency and severity of concussions per individual, and NP tests applied. However on the whole, it was recognised that concussion can have a residual effect, even whilst athletes appear recovered and asymptomatic. This may not be necessarily recognised unless under a cognitive demand. It therefore appears to be subtle and enduring in some individuals after mTBI. It is not known how long this lasts nor the long-term effects of concussion. Nonetheless it is possibly dependent on many contextual factors, such as age, history of concussion, premorbid factors and severity of concussion. Further studies may need to look at the longer course of symptomatic and asymptomatic athletes who have had a history of concussion for further insight into the impact of concussion and its effect of working memory.
