Analysis of a Measure of Youth Mental Health Recovery

Abstract

The prevalence of mental health disorders among young people is a significant global priority. Within the mental health care system, there is a noticeable shift towards adopting a new perspective of recovery that moves away from the conventional medical model, which places a strong emphasis on symptom reduction. This new conceptualisation known as personal recovery takes a more holistic approach and places greater significance on aspects such as well-being, empowerment, and the positive meaning of life. A model of personal recovery that has received empirical validation is the CHIME framework, which encompass the following domains of recovery: connectedness, hope and optimism, identity, meaning and purpose, and empowerment. In the context of youth dealing with mental health challenges, the CHIME domains correspond with two essential processes: restorative processes and resilience processes. The present study aimed to evaluate a recently developed recovery measure specifically designed for youth. The focus of this study is the initial analysis of the youth recovery measure. This measure was structured around the recent conceptualization of youth recovery assessing CHIME processes through the lens of restoration and resilience. A convenience sample of 253 participants aged between 16 to 25 years completed the measure online which consist of 60 items. The survey data was analysed using confirmatory factor analysis. Findings from this study did not support the proposed model. Future studies are required to refine the model and improve the survey items by removal and substitution of items with low factor loadings. This study provided important insights into the conceptualization of youth recovery and its measurement, enabling targeted recoveryoriented processes and interventions for youth mental health.
