Papa, Antoinette (2013) Exploring the effect of optimism on the relationship between mindfulness and subjective well-being. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Subjective wellbeing (SWB) is the subjective measure of the level of satisfaction experienced by an individual with their life. Although it is considered an important indicator of healthy psychological functioning, the structure of SWB remains unclear. Existing research has shown that both dispositional optimism and mindfulness are also important indicators of healthy psychological functioning. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between these three constructs and determine whether dispositional optimism and mindfulness are associated with, or predict levels of SWB. A sample of university students and community adults (N= 173) completed an on-line survey using using three self-report measures- the revised Life Orientation Test (dispositional optimism); the Kentucky Inventory of Mindfulness Skills (mindfulness), and the Personal Wellbeing Index ( subjective wellbeing). The responses were analysed with correlation and regression. The results support a positive significant relationship between all three, but only dispositional optimism was found to significantly predict levels of SWB. These findings suggest that it is worthwhile to further explore the role of dispositional optimism in enhancing levels of SWB.
