Abstract

Divorce and separation are stressful life transitions associated with a wide range of negative social, behavioural and psychological outcomes for adults and children. To decrease the risk negative outcomes and assist with parents and children’s adjustment following divorce, divorce education programs have been widely implemented in many countries. This systematic review aimed to review the effectiveness of these programs at reducing parental stress and improving well-being. A search of the literature for randomised controlled trials of divorce education programs published with the last decade identified eight articles covering seven programs. Overall findings for direct measures of parent well-being found mixed results, limited by the small number of trials which evaluated this outcome. Programs were found to be effective at improving parenting and parent report of children’s well-being, and ineffective at reducing interparental conflict. Most studies were found to be at moderate risk of bias, largely due to methodological limitations and inadequate reporting of randomisation procedures. High rates of attrition and adherence were also identified. Further research is needed to reduce program attrition and improve the effectiveness of programs at reducing interparental conflict.
