Purcell, Zachery (2023) The impact of age and regionality on LGBT+ views of access, social support, and emotional support in the aged care sector. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Aged care is an important service that aims to aid older people with their independence and health. All people, including those who identify themselves as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other alternative gender and sexuality groups (LGBT+) have a right to affirming and appropriate support within aged care. Research into appropriate and affirming care in the aged care sector benefits all participants and supporters regardless of gender or sexual identity. The recent Australian Royal Commission (2021) into aged care services found that inadequate funding, lack of experienced staff, and poor access to healthcare have contributed to substandard care. This information has advanced a growing concern by government bodies, LGBT+ groups and the public that the aged care sector is not properly equipped to provide LGBT+ relevant care and support to this growing priority group as it is shown that even basic care is a struggle to provide. Based on a larger Queensland-based online/paper-based survey study, this study assessed LGBT+ opinions of aged care in Queensland. A total of 233 participants completed the survey. Drawing on cross-cultural theory and using quantitative data from these priority groups will be analysed to determine how differences in age and regionality impact their views on the selected topics. These types of support and accessibility are important to all people seeking aged care, especially LGBT+ identifying people as a feeling of community and understanding can help alleviate mental wellbeing issues and reduce minority stress. This study will find if these variables significantly affect LGBT+ identifying persons' views on support and accessibility in aged care and be used to inform the aged care sector.
