Rathore, Pururaj (2022) An Applied Study into the Effectiveness of an Online Return to Work Intervention. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Traditional face-to-face Work focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (W-CBT) interventions while being effective in alleviating jobseekers’ psychological distress and facilitating return to work outcomes, have limitations including accessibility and quality of trained therapists. Online delivery options provide a promising alternative, however, the effectiveness of these interventions on jobseeker’s confidence and motivation to return to work, health and wellbeing has not been well researched. This retrospective study explores the effectiveness of an online W-CBT intervention delivered by trained clinicians to a group (n = 447) of adult jobseekers in the United Kingdom. This study uses archival data to examine changes in jobseekers’ levels of confidence and motivation to return to work using repeated measures t-test analysis. This study also measures the jobseeker’s health and wellbeing with factors including stress and anxiety, mood and energy, mood and positivity, sleep, diet, exercise via hierarchical regression. It was predicted that the online W-CBT intervention would improve the jobseeker’s confidence and motivation to return to work and improve the health and wellbeing. The results showed a significant improvement in confidence and motivation to return to work and all the health and wellbeing variables pre-to-post WCBT intervention with small to large effect. These findings have implications for engendering greater confidence in online delivered RTW interventions and informing policy decisions.
