Reid-Bell, Nicole (2023) Increasing access to voluntary, culturally-responsive PrEP for HIV prevention for at-risk SSA community members in General Practice settings. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Australia has represented significant successes in the treatment and prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) as biomedical HIV prevention has contributed to Australia’s decrease in transmission, reflected globally. However, migrants from Sub-saharan Africa (SSA) continue to represent a disproportionately high number of HIV notifications, including late diagnosis, in Australia, whilst having limited engagement with adequate HIV healthcare. Ecological systems theory, theory of culture care diversity and universality, and reflexive thematic analysis are utilised to investigate the perspectives of three key informant groups regarding HIV and PrEP as prevention, SSA community members, SSA bilingual cultural health workers, and healthcare professionals. Findings indicate that current HIV healthcare models of care lack culturallyresponsive approaches, perpetuating stigma and enhancing barriers to adequate HIV treatment/prevention for the priority group. Participants shared that enhancing practitioner cultural competency, increasing community led campaigns, and developing holistically tailored care strategies will improve accessibility of PrEP in GP settings. This research contributes to a larger collaborative project aiming to explore and refine healthcare recommendations for HIV prevention for marginalised populations in Australia and beyond. Implications of findings are relevant to research, policy, and clinical practice.
