The Interactive Child Distress Screener: Preliminary Psychometric Properties

Renkin, Jessica A. (2019) The Interactive Child Distress Screener: Preliminary Psychometric Properties. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

One in seven children aged between 4 and 17 years old are identified as having mental health problems. Thus, it is crucial to facilitate early screening to identify and intervene for at-risk or symptomatic children. There are currently no readily available universal screening tools that utilise technology to detect social, emotional and behavioural distress in children through child self-report. The Interactive Child Distress Screener (ICDS) is a new self-report, animated screening instrument for the early identification of emotional, behavioural and social problems in children. This study examines the psychometric properties of the ICDS in a community sample. Results indicated that the ICDS demonstrates promising psychometric properties. Analyses produced acceptable reliability against currently validated measures: the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, Brief Problem Monitor and Me and My School Questionnaire. Further, analysis showed convergent validity with the Me and My School Questionnaire. The ICDS aims to fill a large gap in the field of child mental health as being a much-needed screening instrument for children that is able to accurately obtain self-report from the child themselves, using a familiar, digital format that can be easily disseminated.
