Progressivity of suicidal identities in online forums

Renton, Natasha (2019) Progressivity of suicidal identities in online forums. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to explore how suicidal identities change over time on an Australian, online pro-life suicide forums. A Discursive Psychology approach was used to explicate how suicidal identities were constructed and responded to across a thread. One thread and 262 formed the data corpus for the single-case study. Posts were initially analysed to determine where on a identity continuum a poster claimed to be, and how responders oriented to such claims. Forum participants were shown to utilise different discursive strategies to script themselves up as a suicidal ideator, as compared to someone progressing towards suicidal intent or action. Responders acknowledged and responded to such claims. Using knowledge of how peers with lived experience of suicidality interact and respond to those experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviours may provide some insight to mental health professionals, and inform better practices for identifying, supporting, and responding to those individuals progressing through suicidal stages.
