Abstract

Investigation into how critical thinking disposition and problem-solving style relate to the climate change views of Australian nursing students was undertaken. Results of the study suggested implications on both the nursing industry and the development of nursing curricula. Specifically in terms of the professional identity of nurses, nursing education and changing workplace practices in response to climate change. The present quantitative study (N = 39) utilised an online survey to investigate what relationship the climate change views of Australian nursing students had with their critical thinking dispositions and preferred problem-solving styles. Perspectives on climate change were measured through the Sustainability Attitudes in Nursing Survey 2 (SANS-II). Critical thinking was measured through the Critical Thinking Disposition Scale (CTDS). The third variable of problem-solving style was measured through Kirton’s Adaption-Innovation Inventory (KAI). It was hypothesised here that critical thinking would have a positive correlational relationship with the climate change views of Australian nursing students. While exploration of the problem-solving style and climate change views of nursing students was undertaken to determine whether a relationship existed between these two variables. Research was also conducted to understand the suitability of Kirton’s Adaption-Innovation theory and the KAI when applied to a cohort of student nurses. Overall the study contributes to gaps within the literature by investigating possible relationships critical thinking and problem-solving style may have with the climate change views of Australian nursing students.
