Abstract

The perseverance of workplace gender inequality has been linked to masculinity. Few studies have explored the perceptions of men towards gender equality. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how Australian males currently employed within high-risk industries have experienced gender equality and subsequently, explore how this influences their perceptions of women working within their industry. Using a snowball sampling method, four men expressed an interest in participating and met the strict criteria, thus were recruited for this study. Using semi-structured interviews, data was collected via audiorecordings with the subsequent transcriptions analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. Four themes were identified: (1) inequitable treatment, (2) physical capabilities, (3) deservingness, and (4) organization categorization. Each of these themes contributed to a broader umbrella theme of frustration. The participants’ experiences were discussed in relation to the gender role strain paradigm, developed by Peck (1981) to explore how gender role socialization has contributed to their perceptions. As an exploratory study, the findings in this study may contribute knowledge to the realm of gender equality literature and identify future directions for emerging research.
