Stewart, Patricia (2007) The Effect of Mindfulness and Metacognition on Resilience in Adults. Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Resilience is a relatively new construct that is increasingly being posited as a counter to threats to positive physical and mental health. The construct of resilience has been defined as the ability to cope with negative stressors and move on with life in a flexible and positive manner. This study examined the relationships between measures of mindfulness skills and metacognitive awareness with a measure of resilience. A convenience sample of 183 participants from among colleagues, friends and family members located mainly in Southeast Queensland completed a questionnaire including measures of resilience CDRISC: (Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale), mindfulness; (FFMQ, (Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire) and metacognition (MCQ-30, The Metacognitions Questionnaire 30). Hierarchical multiple regressions found statistically significant positive relationships between the describe, nonreact, and observe subscales of the FFMQ and negative relationships between the uncontrollability, and lack of confidence subscales of the MCQ30, and the full scale score of the CD-RISC. The implications of these findings were discussed and further research incorporating a longitudinal design was recommended to corroborate results offered here and advance understanding of the determinants of robust resilience.
