Abstract

Life expectancy in Australia is increasing, and with it the number of elderly people needing care. With more people deciding to care for their elderly family members at home than put them in a facility, it is important to look at the effects that caregiving can have on the carers mental and physical health. It is also important to understand the effect other variables may have on the health of caregivers. This study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of caregivers. Three participants were recruited, all were female, in their 60’s, and caring for a spouse or parent. Interviews were conducted and transcribed, and using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, five overarching themes were identified. These were: (a) Internal motives and values, (b) External motives and values, (c) Relationship quality, (d) Positive aspects of care, and (e) Negative aspects of care. With a deeper understanding of the personal experiences’ caregivers have, better support services may be made available to enhance the positive aspects of care, and reduce the negatives.
