Sullivan, Mark (2012) Criterion-Related Validity of a New Measure of Adolescent Psychopathy. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Since Cleckley’s seminal work in 1941 profiling the adult psychopathic personality, researchers in this field have developed robust identifiers of the adult psychopath, chiefly, repeated violent behaviour and recidivism. Currently, disturbed adolescents are the focus of research attention so that propensity toward antisocial behaviour can be intercepted and ameliorated before adulthood. These young people, however, may be inadvertently labeled “psychopathic” when demonstrating normative challenging adolescent attitudes and behaviours. The Adolescent Antisocial Attitudes Scale was developed to measure the attitudes of adolescents toward the types of antisocial behaviour that are contained in other adolescent psychopathy measures, without capturing the actual behaviours that other measures contain. In a sample of 117 participants aged 17 years to 19 years 11 months this research compared two current measures of adolescent psychopathy—the Psychopathy Content Scale and the Antisocial Process Screening Device—with the Adolescent Antisocial Attitudes Scale, regarding their ability to predict participation, severity and recency of antisocial behaviour participation using the Adolescent Antisocial Behaviour Scale. Findings for this criterion-related validity study of the Adolescent Antisocial Attitudes Scale indicated that it has comparable ability with these other measures and performed equally well in predicting these aspects of antisocial behaviour.
