Satisfaction with Life in a Regional LGBTQIA+ Population in Australia

Sutherland, Sally (2023) Satisfaction with Life in a Regional LGBTQIA+ Population in Australia. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

People identifying as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, Asexual or other (LGBTQIA+) frequently experience higher levels of psychological distress, which can lead to even poorer mental health and wellbeing. Wellbeing is a complex concept to define but broadly speaking indicates a positive psychological state, good health and life satisfaction. Research indicates LGBTQIA+ individuals residing in regional areas, experience poorer wellbeing than their peers living in metropolitan areas. The Minority Stress suggests the negative perceptions an individual may internalise about their sexual and/or gender identity may contribute to poorer wellbeing. The current study forms part of a larger project examining the health and wellbeing of LGBTQIA+ individuals in a regional Australian area. Drawing on archival data from the Safe Connections Toowoomba: LGBTQIA+ Health and Wellbeing Survey conducted in 2022, this current study aims to examine if perceptions of acceptance, support and safety are associated with life satisfaction. The survey consisted of 111 participants who identified within the LGBTQIA+ umbrella and resided in the Toowoomba region of Queensland Australia. Feelings of support, acceptance and safety were rated using a five-point Likert scale. Psychological wellbeing was assessed via The Satisfaction with Life Scale and question one of The Healthy Days Measure. It is anticipated that findings from this study will add to research into LGBTQIA+ health and wellbeing and assist support services to create safe and accepting spaces that better support LGBTQIA+ individuals.
