Taeni, Jemima (2019) Factoring Future Time Perspective in Relation to Chronic Pain. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Time perception plays an important role in the ageing process and its associated consequences, including the high incidence of chronic pain. In order to understand the role time perception plays in the adaptation to chronic pain, and the impact chronic pain has on time perception, there is a need for consistency in the way future time perspective (FTP) is conceptualised and measured. The future time perspective scale (FTPS) was initially used to measure FTP as a unidimensional construct ranging from future as open to future as limited. However, more recent research has found FTP is comprised of two, or even three factors, which can vary independently with other psychological variables. As pain is one of these variables known to impact on the way people perceive time, the current study aimed to explore the factor structure of the FTPS within a population of individuals experiencing chronic pain. This was done by recruiting 319 participants experiencing chronic pain to fill out the FTPS and the joint pain history questionnaire (JPHQ). An exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted on the data to determine whether there were one, two or three factors present within FTP. Results found that FTP is made up of two factors which seem to relate to whether individuals see themselves having time left in life and opportunities to pursue goals in the future. There were named Future as Open and Future as Limited. This lends support to future research relating time perception and chronic pain to use a two-factor model of FTP.
