An Exploration of Counsellor Training and Professional Affiliation in Queensland

Thumpkin, Megan (2014) An Exploration of Counsellor Training and Professional Affiliation in Queensland. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

The aim of the current study was to explore the level of training counsellors received, and whether this training included instruction in ethical behaviour. Furthermore, the study explored whether counsellors were affiliated with a professional organisation, and whether the membership of that professional body required adherence to an ethical code. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), five individuals who identified themselves as counsellors were interviewed on the subject of their training, the importance of ethical behaviour, qualifications received, their professional affiliations, and their thoughts regarding the registration of counselling in Australia. The results of the study indicated that every participant had received formal training in counselling, and all felt strongly that the ethical component of their training was integral. Each of the participants belonged to a professional body, and all stated that this was important, however limiting counsellors to a single governing body was not universally accepted.
