Elderly Female Immigrants and the Meaning of Home: An Australian Perspective

Abstract

Australia has one of the most diverse immigrant populations in the world with an increasing number of people aged 65 years and over. While research on the meaning of home in the context of international migration is growing fast, the experiences of home of elderly immigrants are almost absent from these discussions. Research has shown that disregarding disparities in the understandings of the meaning of home among different elderly immigrant groups may lead to confusion and inappropriate actions of organisations and authorities working with the elderly. Guided by Scannell and Gifford’s tripartite organising framework, this qualitative study used a phenomenological developmental perspective to explore what factors may obstruct or facilitate the experience of home of elderly female immigrants (aged 65+ years) in Australia. A purposive, snowball sampling method was used to recruit three participants. The semi-structured interviews were audio recorded and subsequently transcribed. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), four superordinate themes have been identified: (1) Empowering – a Retreat the older Person cannot imagine living without; (2) Moving forward – Home as a Transitional Process; (3) Integration, and (4) Home beyond the House – Physical and Social features. It is hoped that this study may expand our knowledge of how elderly immigrants with different cultural backgrounds define home and help to shape future policy and practice to promote their mental health and wellbeing.
