Trainee Psychologist Perceptions: Psychometric Properties of a University Supervisor Appraisal Form

Waters, Sally (2022) Trainee Psychologist Perceptions: Psychometric Properties of a University Supervisor Appraisal Form. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

Fostering and developing skilled and competent psychologists is an important goal of postgraduate psychology programs. Supervisors play an integral role in the process by guiding trainees as they begin to see clients for the first time. Harnessing trainee perceptions of supervisors provides useful feedback on the process. However, psychometrically sound feedback forms are needed to minimise measurement error and provide an accurate indication of the quality of the professional supervision experience. This study explored the psychometric properties of the University of Southern Queensland Community Supervisor Appraisal form. The form allows for postgraduate master's trainee psychologists to provide feedback on their supervisor at the end of a university clinic practicum or external practicum. Archival data from first-year students (N = 137) over two practicums from 2012-2018 was analysed. Exploratory factor analysis conducted on the 11-item scale yielded a two-factor structure: skill development and professional care. While the form showed good convergent validity and internal reliability, face validity of some of the items was lacking. It is recommended that further psychometric testing of the form be conducted with a broader representative sample. Other measures could be added to the data collected at the end of each practicum, to assess correlation relationships between measures, to further investigate validity. A psychometrically sound measure will enable the continued evidence-based investigation into how supervision impacts trainee competence, client experience, and outcomes and inform improvements to programs.
