White, Tamara (2013) The role of forgiveness and mindfulness in Posttraumatic Growth (PTG). Coursework Masters thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
The current thesis conducted two studies to investigate the relationship between the constructs of forgiveness, mindfulness and Posttraumatic Growth (PTG) in a community and university sample (N=393) using an online survey. Participant demographics found a mean age of 33.08 years with 16.8 per cent males and 83.2 per cent females. Study 1 investigated the predicted correlational relationships between the variables mindfulness, forgiveness, PTSD symptomology, and PTG. The results from Study 1 were mixed. First, as predicted, the results provided support for the hypothesised correlation relationships between forgiveness, PTSD symptomology, and PTG. Contrary to the hypotheses, the predicted positive correlational relationship between mindfulness and PTG was not obtained. Study 2 built upon the findings of Study 1 by investigating the direction of the relationship between key variables. Specifically, Study 2 hypothesised that forgiveness functioned as a mediator or moderator between mindfulness and PTG and investigated this relationship using a Path Analysis via Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). As predicted, Study 2 found forgiveness functioned as a mediator between mindfulness and PTG. The clinical and theoretical implications of the findings obtained from the two studies will be discussed in the context of current trauma research and treatment research.
