Whybrow, Sarah (2020) The Effect of Phonemic Codes on Short-Term Memory. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Previous studies suggested the introduction of phonological coding during memory tasks could result in disruptive and transient effects on short-term memory. Prior studies have explored irrelevant speech effects using phonologically similar words and found that facilitative effects were present. However, these results have not been tested with the use of a control condition. As a result, the present study examined the facilitative effects of phonological codes on word recall, using an immediate and 2-second delay condition. Participants were over the age of 18-years-old and recruited through the researcher’s social network (n = 48). Participants were separated equally into immediate or 2-second delayed retention interval conditions. A 2x3 repeated measures mixed ANOVA observed disruptive effects, however, no facilitative effects were found. This result was unexpected and possible reasons for this are suggested within this study. Another unexpected result was the lack of transience observed for both facilitative and disruptive effects. Past research suggested that transience occurs after two seconds, so these results may be due to methodological weaknesses. Alternatively, the theory that transient information is immune from proactive interference for two seconds could be incorrect. The implications of these results are discussed further within the study.
