Abstract

Little empirical research exists exploring the experiences of trans and gender diverse people seeking gender affirming surgery (GAS) in Queensland, Australia. When compared to other Australian states, GAS is under-resourced and lacks a comprehendible access pathway in Queensland. Trans and gender diverse populations experience disproportionately higher rates of discrimination, violence, mental health concerns, unemployment, and financial hardship – adversely affecting their health and wellbeing. This project explores opportunities for developing an evidence-based public health response for trans and gender diverse people to reflect Queensland’s commitment to human rights and international best practice. Semistructured interviews were conducted with three (3) trans and gender diverse individuals, and six (6) key representatives from community organisations of which five (5) also identify as trans or gender diverse. Interviews explored attitudes towards current models of gender affirming care, barriers to the provision of GAS, and opportunities for developing and implementing a publicly-funded gender affirming model in Queensland. Braun and Clarke’s (2021) reflexive thematic analysis was employed to analyse interview data. Findings indicate access to GAS remains prohibitive, with barriers identified at individual, societal, and structural levels. Implications of alternative models of gender affirming care are explored to improve health and wellbeing outcomes of trans and gender diverse people in Queensland. Findings are relevant to future research, and the development of clinical policy to establish appropriate and accessible pathways to GAS in Queensland.
