Yeates, Liam A. H. (2019) Parental Gatekeeping and its Impact on Fathering Post Separation. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)
Abstract
Parental gatekeeping has been the subject of research with intact couples however there is limited research in regard to parents who are separated and divorced. Gatekeeping, generally maternal in nature, refers to behaviour that limits the other parents’ involvement in parenting tasks. This systematic review of the literature confirmed that the current research regarding gatekeeping is limited and mostly exploratory in nature. It was also noted that there are significant discrepancies between measurement and conceptualisation of gatekeeping, making research more difficult to compare. Also explored was the impact of gatekeeping on father involvement with some research suggesting that in separated and divorced couples father involvement was negatively correlated with gatekeeping by mothers. Finally, the question of if gatekeeping was more prevalent in couples who were separated compared with intact couples was considered. Again, the research is inadequate, but it was found that there was no independent prediction of gatekeeping by residential status of fathers with children. Additional research is required to address all questions with future research suggested to be aligned with concepts and methods used in research into gatekeeping within intact couples.
