A Pilot Study to Investigate the Effects of a Mindfulness Breathing Program on Mindfulness and Emotion Regulation Strategies

Zammit, Nicholas (2015) A Pilot Study to Investigate the Effects of a Mindfulness Breathing Program on Mindfulness and Emotion Regulation Strategies. Honours thesis, University of Southern Queensland. (Unpublished)

Abstract

Links between mindfulness and emotion regulation have been found due to both constructs emphasising differentiation of our emotions and limiting our reactivity to our thoughts and external stressors (Baer, Smith, Hopkins, Krietemeyer, & Toney, 2006; Hill & Updegraff, 2012). The current pilot study investigated the effect of an 8-week mindfulness breathing program. The object of attention was the breath and breath counting was a strategy employed to train mindfulness. The outcomes were self-reported mindfulness, as measured by the Five Facets of Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ; Baer et al., 2006) and emotion regulation strategies, cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression, as measured by the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ; Gross & John, 2003). A 2 (control and treatment) X 3 (Time 1, Time 2 and Time 3) randomised between-within subjects design was conducted (treatment group n=30, and control group n=26) at the University of Southern Queensland, with an adult sample. Significant results were found over Time 1 to Time 2 for mindfulness and cognitive reappraisal, with the treatment group showing improvement in comparison to the control group. There were non-significant results for expressive suppression across all three testing sessions. Due to the current study being a pilot study, further research and replication of the current methodology is required to provide further evidence towards the effect of the mindfulness breathing program.
