Pedroza, Daniel (2018) Terrestrial Laser Scanners and its applications for pavement conformance in accordance to Roads and Maritime Services QA Specifications G71 – Construction Surveys. [USQ Project]
Abstract
This dissertation investigates the use of terrestrial laser scanners for pavement conformances, specifically if they comply with the Roads and Maritime Services Quality Assurance Specifications G71 - Construction Surveys. It will introduce the Roads and Maritime Services Quality Assurance Specifications covering the requirements for survey regarding orders of accuracy, tolerances and sight distances. This dissertation will highlight the information gap missing within the area, being that there has not been a lot of research in the use of the terrestrial laser scanners with pavement conformances and if they are an appropriate tool to use on construction sites. This research will be undertaken using four common surveying instruments that will be used to survey a simple road, and will compare conformance compliance using a common surveying program – 12d Model.
Once data was collected from all four instruments it was exported into Leica Cyclone to generate point clouds and then further exported into 12d Model to allow rendering of a draped conformance report to compare all the survey instruments. The extrapolated results showed that the multi-station instruments were the closest in effectiveness to the total station and therefore the most appropriate for use by the RMS, in accordance with G71. This dissertation concludes with several recommendations for further research into this topic, to allow for a more comprehensive assessment of a multitude of surveying instruments.
