Alwazzan, Ali (2018) Improving biodiesel combustion using commercial diesel treatment additive. [USQ Project]
Abstract
This study investigates experimentally the performance, combustion and emission characteristics of diesel engine by using different fuels. Different fuels investigated in this study include pure diesel (diesel100), pure cottonseed biodiesel (CSB100), blend of 5% fuel additive and 95% biodiesel (CSBimp5), and blend of 10% fuel additive and 90% biodiesel (CSBimp10). Performance, combustion and emissions characteristics of diesel engine are studied at engine speed of 1600 rpm, 2000 rpm and 2400 rpm. In the results, it is found that three fuels CSB100, CSBimp5 and CSBimp10 show higher BSFC as compared to that diesel. Brake power and exhaust temperature of these three fuels are found to be almost same and there exists no significant difference in these two parameters. Combustion properties of blends CSBimp5 and CSBimp10 are similar to that of pure diesel. Regarding emission characteristics, significant unburnt hydrocarbons emissions are found to be reduced in biodiesel blends CSB100, CSBimp5 and CSBimp10 than that of pure diesel at each engine speed. Carbon dioxide emissions are found to be higher in these fuels as compared to that of diesel at each engine speed. Nitrogen oxides emissions are found to be higher in diesel fuel as compared to other fuels at each engine speed. Oxygen emissions of CSB100, CSBimp5 and CSBimp10 are found to be increased than that of pure diesel.
