Abstract
As the field of engineering undergoes technological advances, project managers and engineering professionals alike are required to work with complicated issues outside their field of knowledge. The management of asbestos is not a newly discovered hazard, but simply something that has been encountered in an unfamiliar form. The management of civil construction projects which are encumbered with Naturally Occurring Asbestos rock lithology presents itself as a difficult issue whereby traditional procedures are rendered ineffective. The successful management of such a site has proven to be a combination of knowledge across a broad range of fields. A host of similar engineering projects had been observed where Naturally Occurring Asbestos had been encountered, often resulting in accidental health-exposures, with projects exceeding financial budgets whilst suffering productivity losses. This paper intends to deal with this issue by observational assessment of two engineering construction projects undertaken in a bid to raise awareness of the issues arising from working within asbestos encumbered land in terms of cost, productivity and time.
