Reliability of Internal Co-ordinate Quality Indicator Values for Trimble RTK GNSS measurements

Martin, Jackson John Raymond (2017) Reliability of Internal Co-ordinate Quality Indicator Values for Trimble RTK GNSS measurements. [USQ Project]

Abstract

Internal Coordinate Quality Indicators (CQ Values) have been identified as an area of uncertainty in the field of Real - Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) surveying. Therefore, the research project focused on investigating the reliability of these CQ Values and determining if there was a relationship between logging time and reliability. Trimble receivers, positioned on the 6th floor of Z Block were used to record the data; Single - Base and Network RTK systems were both tested.

The results revealed, when the 1 second Network data was compared with past findings that there may have been a change in the calculation of CQ Values; transitioning from being overly optimistic to overly pessimistic. The precision and CQ Value comparison at the 95th percentile for Single - Base data displayed no relationship between logging time and CQ Values. In contrast, the Network data demonstrated from the 30 second logging time duration onwards, a positive relationship between logging time and CQ Values.

Overly pessimistic CQ Values present a better scenario for surveyors; the observation the CQ Value represents will more than likely be of better quality than what has been estimated. For the Network RTK dataset the surveyor can confidently rely upon the CQ Values displayed on the controller as the increased logging time duration had a positive impact on the positional accuracy of the observations.

The findings are limited by only using Trimble equipment and services and the conditions testing was conducted in. Further research into how the CQ Values are calculated and the effect of movement between observations could be a worthwhile endeavour. The results achieved have the ability to shape future research and provide surveyors with additional techniques to potentially mitigate erroneous solutions when using RTK GNSS equipment.
