AL Majdali, Musaed M. SH. M. SH. (2017) GSM Based Automatic Digital Metering for Power and Gas Utilities. [USQ Project]
Abstract
Most of the world metering system is based on analog meters. In today’s modern world analog metering system is not able to provide the accurate and effective readings of the consumption of the power and gas utilities due to inherent limitations of analog systems. For example, analog energy meters do not give accurate reading of the energy consumption when the load current is distorted. Similarly analog gas meters do not measure the correct reading of the flow of gas when external environmental conditions changes.
Above are just two examples of the problems in the analog metering system. There are many more such problems that exist in the analog metering system. In this project all the problems of the analog metering system are investigated thoroughly, and model of the automatic digital metering system is presented which not only contains the solution of all of the problems of analog metering system but also offers some advance features based on GSM technology to both utility consumer as well as the utility providing company. The proposed design of metering system not only measures all the critical parameters of the power and gas utilities, but also has the built-in option to transmit the utility consumption data to both utility user mobile and utility company database wirelessly. There are many other significant features of the GSM based automated digital metering system which are discussed in details in the final report of the project.
The complete model of the proposed GSM based automated digital metering system is designed and simulated and its effectiveness is proved using the industry standard electronics simulation software known as Proteous. The detail about the design and working of the complete smart metering system is presented in various chapters of the report.
