Yousif, Talal (2019) Renewable Alternative Fuel for Diesel Engine. [USQ Project]
Abstract
The focus of this work is on the testing of alternative fuels for diesel engines. Given the disastrous impact of diesel on the environment, it is time to look for potential substitutes. One of the proposed alternatives is dimethylfuran or a blend of dimethylfuran with biodiesel. Previous work has shown that dimethyl ether is promising candidate for diesel engines. The main objective of this work was to test the performance of the engine and its emission characteristics when used with dimethylfuran. In addition to, CFD simulation was also performed on a separate system but based on the same test fuels; dimethylfuran and diesel fuel. The simulation was performed on a cylindrical combustor. The CFD simulation provided insight into the emission characteristics of the two fuels by giving approximations of the concentrations of the harmful byproducts of combustion such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2). The results from the CFD simulation proved that dimethylfuran was the better fuel in terms of emission characteristics. Furthermore, findings from the experiment concluded that the dimethylfuran overall showed better emission characteristics than conventional diesel. However, further research work is needed to compare the two fuel blends based on engine performance. Dimethylfuran (DMG - 5%) blended with B20 (gasoline) was shown to be more environmentally friendly than DMF blended with petroleum diesel. In addition to, performance testing of the three fuel configurations was also carried out in which conventional fuel showed superior performance.
