Abstract

Precast concrete floating walkways and pontoons are becoming increasingly common over alternative structures and Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) have been implementing them more widely in their marine infrastructure across the state. Many of these floating walkway and pontoon structures have not been achieving their design or service life due to the problems developing with the corrosion of the steel reinforcement in the concrete.

This dissertation involved the critical analysis of precast concrete specimens reinforced with glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars and the behaviour they exhibit when under uniform loading conditions. Four specimens were cast with varying parameters that included double layer reinforcement compared to single layer reinforcement, and a solid deck construction compared to a deck with a pier cut-out on one side.

Uniform load testing was conducted on each of the four specimens using two airbags that applied the load over the specimen evenly. The results of the testing found that the specimens with the solid construction was capable of bearing a 30% - 40% higher load than the specimens with the pier cut-outs and the specimens with double layer reinforcement was capable of bearing a 20 – 30% higher load than the specimens with single layer reinforcement. All of the concrete specimens failed through flexure cracking and minor concrete crushing and the cut-out specimens also exhibited shear/flexural cracking.

Theoretical evaluation was also completed to compare the behaviour of the specimens to the existing Australian Standards, and it was found that the GFRP reinforced specimens performance met and exceeded the standards. The GFRP is a suitable replacement for steel reinforcement, but further work can be completed to consider further factors including durability and the effects of temperature.
