Abstract
There are 53,000 bridges across Australia; maintaining and rehabilitating them using traditional materials and construction systems can be extremely costly. The need for alternative durable and sustainable materials and technology, such as FRP composites, deemed necessary. While the use of FRP composites in pedestrian bridges has been very successful, their use in road bridges is faced with some challenges. Some of these challenges are the limited understanding and experience in using FRP composites in road bridges, lack of design guidelines and standards, lack of skilled designers and workers, as well as insufficient budget.
This research project evaluates the suitability of Fibre Reinforced Polymer (FRP) composites for road bridges and determines the most cost-effective geometry. This research is implemented in three stages. Stage one includes a critical review of literature on FRP composites, their types, properties, advantages, and disadvantages. It also includes reviewing literatures on bridges, their history, classifications, components and building materials. Stage two includes implementing an Analytical Hierarch Process (AHP) to rank the critical design parameters for bridges and to select the most effective geometry for road bridges using FRP composites. The top three ranked geometries were then used to design and to analyse a case study of a road bridge. All three designs have the same member properties, same span, width, loading, deflection limits, and tensile strength. An evaluation of the amount of materials, deflection limit, stresses in the members and effectiveness of the usage of FRP composites is implemented.
The results of this study show that the truss model proves to be the most effective geometry for road bridges using FRP composites, followed by the cantilever and then the beam model.
